marcy’s socks
I can be extremely driven to create, thinking of and doing nothing else when I really get on a roll… but when it comes to making things I’m somehow obligated to make, I’m a horrible procrastinator. This is why I still have Christmas presents that aren’t finished, and also why it took me well over a week to knit a pair of shoes that truly only takes me a few hours to make.
… And also why my friend JC had to wait (mumblesomething) months for these socks he ordered for his wife, Marcy. Sigh. But I got them done, finally. Actually, the green pair is what he ordered; I threw in the red pair (1) as a thank-you for being so patient, and (2) because, honestly, I’m not all that happy with how the green pair came out. And yes, I’m my own worst critic, blah blah, but I think the flaws may be obvious this time. I hate sending out what I perceive to be imperfect goods, but this time? I don’t hate it enough to knit them again!
It’s kinda funny – ever since I started dyeing yarn, and therefore handling nice soft merino wool all. the. time., I’ve started to really hate working with acrylic. I mean, REALLY. These socks were almost painful to knit. I already donated about half of my acrylic stash to the local thrift store; I think the rest is soon to follow.

I clicked the picture to the bigger size and they look good to me! Is it really acrylic? Bummer, cuz i sorta like that greeny colorway!
Thanks.
They still look good in the picture… it’s where I picked up stitches for the heel that isn’t so hot, and it really shows when you put them on.
And yep – all acrylic. Red Heart, even. *makes a face* I wish I could find something like BOTH of those colorways in a different yarn – even a blend would be better, y’know?
I think the socks look cute! But I hear you about acrylic. I think that’s why I didn’t knit for so many years–all my mom could afford to work with was Red Heart, and it always felt so yucky to me.
It’s really all I can afford to work with, too – unless I get lucky and find sweaters to unravel for yarn. But I’m starting to think I’d rather just not knit than knit with acrylic. Very yucky.
Oh that sound just like me. I’ve got a baby blanket to do, and I swear I’ll come up with 10 projects to do before I submit myself to that danged blanket. I think it might be because it was assigned to me by the person having the baby. If I had had an opportunity to come up with the idea on my own, it might not have been so bad. =( And I’m choosing cotton over acrylic. I know the colors don’t last as long, but it will feel so much better to baby’s skin.
Pssst, why do i not have an email addy for you! Gah!
Got my invite!
AntiChristy – What makes it worse is that it’s stuff I volunteered myself for. LOL! But I still drag my ass when it comes to making it. I’m terrible.
I would definitely have chosen cotton over acrylic, but I’m not sure how worsted cotton would knit as socks, and of course it doesn’t come in such awesome colors – at least not cheaply, anyway. I have some baby things to make in the next few months, and I’m DEFINITELY using cotton.
Suz – I left it in a comment on your blog.
